Veterinarian’s message to Trump: Farmers need help
Farmers and supporters waited several hours before President Trump’s farmer roundtable event in northwestern Wisconsin Friday. One of them was Becky Gee, a large animal vet in South Dakota who was raised on her family’s Ohio dairy farm.Â
Gee says she supports the President, but says agriculture needs help. “Farmers need assistance because again, as I said, it’s the backbone of the American economy, like we’re feeding America, and if that falls, you’re going to see everything. Agriculture is not just about food, it’s about products. There’s a lot of things that are involved with agriculture, and if it goes, everything is going to go with it.”
Gee says the Trump administration has helped farmers by repealing some regulations, but she would like more focus now on input costs including fuel. “Especially if you’re paying other people to put your crops in, such as we do. That is also an issue because those prices rise. You’re paying not only for the person that’s planting for you, for them to come to the location, you’re also paying for all of the equipment, for renting that equipment, and you’re paying for the fuel in that equipment.”
Gee spoke to Brownfield before President Trump’s roundtable with farmers at Custer Farms near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin Friday.
