Gov. Landry makes recommendations about Greenland to President Trump

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he has made recommendations to President Trump about the future of the relationship the United States and Greenland.

The president named Landry special envoy to Greenland in 2025.

In the past, President Trump has floated the idea of having jurisdiction over the semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. The president has also said Greenland is crucial to the security of the U.S.

In a post on social media, Landry said he recommended the president pursue the following priorities with the Arctic island:

  • Establish direct shipping routes between the United States and Greenland
  • Expand the U.S. diplomatic presence in Greenland
  • Approve Denmark’s State Partnership Program application with an Arctic and Greenland focus while strengthening the U.S. military presence on the island
  • Create a U.S.–Greenland Joint Investment Fund
  • Expand educational, cultural, and public diplomacy exchanges between the United States and Greenland

The governor also spoke about what he said he took away from a trip to Greenland.

“When I visited in May, Greenlanders made one thing clear: they feel abandoned by Denmark,” Landry said. “A stronger American presence would make both Greenland and the United States stronger.”
