U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that no transit fees will be charged for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day ceasefire period.
Writing on Truth Social on June 20, Trump said that no country would be required to pay transit fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire.
He added that no fees would be imposed after the 60-day period either, unless the agreement between the parties fails to be finalized.
The U.S. president said that if efforts to complete the agreement are unsuccessful, transit fees could be imposed by the United States for its own benefit.
Trump claimed that the United States has acted as a “guardian angel” for Middle Eastern countries and said that, if no agreement is reached, such fees could be used to compensate Washington for its past, present, and future costs in the region.
He did not provide further details about the nature of the agreement he referred to or how such transit fees would be implemented.
The remarks come as concerns over maritime security and the continuity of global trade through the Strait of Hormuz have eased somewhat following the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.
